Real Apple Logo in Photoshop

Step 1

I started by getting a vector version of the logo so I could make a shape layer on photoshop.

Step 2

Then I found a photo of an Apple to use as my base.

Step 3

Using the liquify tool I morphed the Apple close to the shape of the logo.

Step 4

In order to give it an ultra realistic feel to it, I adjusted the saturation, removed the original glow, and used smart blur and the clone tool to only keep the most prominent details of the apple. Then I masked it into the shape of the logo.

Step 5

With the brush tool I added highlights and shadows to the shape to accentuate the volume.

Step 6

I morphed the leaf with the liquify tool to make it come close to the original logo shape. I found that if I was 100% faithful to the shape it just looked too fake, so I retained some of the original leaf shape.

Step 7

Now the actual bite!

I found a picture of a bitten apple and masked it into this hand drawn shape. I also added a bit of a shadow around it and inside it to give it some contour and depth.

Finally I added the floor shadow and voila!

Here are my layers… I like to keep my highlights in separate layers so I can control individual opacity as well as the filter.

Cool Text Effect with the Puppet Warp Tool in Photoshop CS5

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document. I'm using 2560x1440 pixels for the size. After that import a photo of a rope. The one I used is courtesy of Shutterstock and you can find it here.

Step 2

We will be using the Puppet Warp tool to create our text effect, but to make it work properly the rope has to be really long. You will also have to extract the background of the layer, leaving just the rope. After that go to Edit>Puppet Warp. The default mode will show a mash over your object, to hide it just deselect the Show Meshoption.

Step 3

Now start adding points or joints, I don't even know how to call those things. As you can see in the image below, I added one at the beginning of the rope and one at the end. Start moving them around to see how they behave. Tips, if you hold ALT you can rotate the point, a little circle will show so you can use it as a controller. Also if you click on the point holding ALT you will delete it.

Step 4

Start creating your word, below you can see the R of rope.

Step 5

Keep editing, it takes quite some time to get used to how things work, it's important to not stretch the rope too much otherwise it will distort the image.

Step 6

Another really cool feature with the Puppet Wart is that you can change the order of the mesh in terms of depth, it's quite impressive how they do that but for example you can define with part goes on over the other using the Pin Depth icons.

Step 7

After a few minutes moving the points I got a quite convincing result for the word ROPE.

Step 8

Import the rope image again and connect it with the R, then do the same with the E.

Step 9

Add a new layer on top of the others and with the Brush Tool (B) use a very soft brush with black, paint the areas marked below to create some shadows. Group this layer into a folder and change the Blend Mode of the folder to Color Burn at 50% Opacity.

Step 10

Group all layers and duplicate the group, then with the duplicated group selected go to Layer>Merge Group. Change the Blend Mode of the group to Overlay.

Step 11

Using the rope image again, create another effect using the Puppet Warp tool.

Step 12

Import a paper texture and place on top of the other layers. The one I used is from Shutterstock and can be found here.

Select all layers but the paper texture, then group them. After that duplicate the group, select this new group and go to Filter>Convert for Smart Filters.

Step 13

With the Smart Object layer selected go to Filter>Blur>Guassian Blur. Use 8 pixels for the Radius. One cool thing about Smart Filters is that they behave like masks, there is a white thumbnail next to the Smart Filter sub layer that is like a mask, everything that is white gets the filter, what is black doesn't and the grey scales areas the filter is less strong. This is perfect to create a sort of depth of field effect.

With the Brush Tool (B) and a very soft brush, paint of the ROPE word area with black and also the whole rope that connects the word. Use the image below for reference.

Step 14

Select all layers and duplicate them, after that merge the duplicated layers and go toFilter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 15 pixels for the radius. Duplicate this layer, so you will have 2 blurry layers. The one at the top use Screen for the Blend Mode at 50% Opacity and the one beneath use Overlay for the Blend Mode with 50% of Opacity as well.

Step 15

Go to Layer>New Adjustments Layer>Hue and Saturation. Reduce the Saturation to -40.

Conclusion

The Puppet Warp tool is an incredible tool which shows an incredible technology behind it, like there are some things that are quite mind blowing such as the changing depths of the mesh. This tutorial was just an example of how to use it to create a text made out of rope. Now it's up to you to come up with much cooler ideas.

Create a Dark and Rainy Crime Scene in Photoshop

Step 1

First, create a new file with a size of 900 x 700 px and a resolution of 300 ppi.

Step 2

Next, open Brick.jpg then resize it and duplicate it as shown below. We did this because we need smaller looking bricks to be more realistic with this scale. Make sure to overlap each layers seamlessly so that it looks like as a one big wall. Merge all the layers and name it as "Wall."

Step 3

Desaturate the "Wall" layer. To do this go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate or use the shortcut keys Shift + Cmd/Ctrl + U. After that, go to Image > Adjustments > Levels, Cmd/Ctrl + L and change the values with the ones indicated below.

Step 4

Next, use the Burn tool (O) as indicated below.

Step 5

Using the Rectangular Marquee tool (M), make a rectangle (a), then fill it #000000. Next, using a soft brush with #ffffff, apply subtle amounts in the areas indicated below, (b).

Using the Brush tool (B), make a curtain-like silhouette on the left-side of the rectangle.

After that, open the files Splattersmear.jpg and Splatterlong.jpg, then resize then inside the rectangle.

Step 6

Next, open the file Window.jpg. Using the Rectangular Marquee tool (M), select only the window from the image, (a). Next, using the Magic Wand tool (W), select the glass paneling of the window then hit delete (b), this will leave only the frame of the window, (c). Next, desaturate the image. To do this, go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate or use the shortcut keys Shift + Cmd/Ctrl + U, (d). The final step is to change the Levels of the image, to do this go to Image > Adjustments >Levels, Cmd/Ctrl + L and change the values with the ones indicated below, (e).

Place the window frame as shown below.

Step 7

Next we'll add the garbage container, to do this open Garbagecontainers.jpg. Using the Pen tool (P), select the garbage container leaving the background behind, right-click and select Make Selection from the drop-down menu and from there change the feather radius to 0 px then hit OK, (a). Next by using the Burn tool (O), burn the areas indicated below, (b). The final effect should look like (c).

Place the garbage container in the lower right corner of our image. The final effect should look like the one shown below.

Step 8

Next is to add the Air conditioner. Open Aircon.jpg, using the the Pen tool (P) make a path all over the outline of the air conditioner including the support structure. Right-click and make a selection from the drop-down menu and press OK, (a). Next, using the Burn tool (O), burn the areas indicated below, (b). Finally, using the Brush tool (O), set to 20 px and hardness 90%, draw some shadows under the air conditioning and the support member. After that go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and apply the indicated value below, (c)

The final effect is shown below but the image looks rather flat, so for the following steps we need to add some shading and highlights.

Step 9

Using the Burn tool (O), burn the areas indicated below.

Next, using the Brush tool (B) with a size of 60 px and Hardness of 0%, brush the areas indicated below. After that, decrease its opacity level to 50%.

Step 10

Next, using the Polygonal Lasso tool (L), draw a shape like the one shown below, then using the Paint Bucket tool (G), fill the entire selection with #ffffff.

Now go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and change the value for the radius to 60 px.

Next, using the Eraser tool (E), erase the areas indicated below.

The final effect should look like the one shown below.

Next, we'll add some light rays for that extra effect. To do this, use the Pen tool to draw the paths which is then defined to use the Brush tool with a Master Diameter of 19 px and a Hardness of 0%.

Next, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and change its radius to 20 px.

The final effect should look like the one shown below.

Next, by using the Brush tool (B) with a size of 15 px, draw some lines like as shown below.

Next go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur and change its radius to 30 px. After that decrease its opacity level to 40%.

Step 11

Next, create a new layer and fill it with #000000. Go to Filter > Render > Clouds. Set this layer's blend mode to Overlay.

So far so good, the final effect should look like the one shown below.

Next using the Brush tool (B) with color #000000, Master Diameter of 175 px and Hardness of 0%, brush the areas indicted below, then decrease its opacity level to 60%.

Add a new layer and fill it with #006773 then set its Blend mode to Soft Light and Opacity level to 50%.

The final effect should look like the one shown below.

Step 12

Next add a new layer and name it "Rain." Now using the Paint Bucket tool (G), fill the entire layer with #000000. Next, go to Filter > Render > Fibers and follow the indicated values as shown below.

Next, press Cmd/Ctrl + T to activate the resizing tool, rotate this layer to about 45 degrees as shown below. After that, set its Blend Mode to Overlay and decrease its Opacity level to 20%.
